One of the best EDC flashlights with the best UI

5 August, 2010 (14:18) | Product Reviews | By: admin

This review is from: Surefire T1A Titan Variable-Output LED Flashlight

Even though I own several flashlights, this is my favorite EDC (every day carry). The User Interface (U.I.) is one of the best out there. While other EDCs have one or more light intensity levels and functions (strobe, beacon, etc.), they require you to do different procedures with the switch that some would find difficult to remember. With the T1A, you just turn the bezel one way for more light output, and the other way for less light in a gradual form, couldn’t be easier.

Some users complain about the 5 min auto-off feature it has, but I like it. Frequently when somebody borrows mine, they leave it in the lowest setting thinking that they have turned it off (it has a click detent just before it turns off completely). This feature gives me peace of mind by not worrying about battery depletion by accident, besides, if you turn it on beyond 5% intensity level or so, this feature is disabled.

The beam is “floody”, which means it’s not too concentrated on the center, it gives the impression of less output than it really has but this has its advantages as it helps you to see where you are stepping while lighting the way further in front of you or looking inside drawers or suitcases. Some reviewers report that the max true output is 81 lumens out the front (OTF) instead of the specified 70 lumens, Surefire is known to be conservative on the specified output of their flashlights. The light output is very adecuate and when used at the lower settings it doesn’t impair your night vision when you turn it off.

Extremely well built, very smooth operation and super-reliable. Some users have reported “angry blue” tint on their T1A’s, but I think the newer lights have this problem resolved (mine is cool white which is OK for me). Some would consider it expensive but really well worth it IMHO. Get it, you won’t regret it. If it’s a present for someone special, he or she are going to LOVE it.

GS-E1B-EWP01

SureFire® 30th Anniversary Collector Set

To commemorate our 30th anniversary, SureFire has released a limited edition collector set that includes our E1B Backup® flashlight and our original SureFire Pen. Both pieces are hard-anodized with a rugged but smooth SureFire Camo finish that features SureFire’s signature red, accented with black and silver. Both the Backup and SureFire Pen are engraved with matching serial numbers and accompanied by a letter of authenticity from company founder and president, Dr. John Matthews. This is a limited run—with only 1,800 sets—that will not be repeated.

E1B Backup®

This ultra compact dual-output flashlight was designed as a backup light for patrol officers or a primary light for plain-clothes officers, but it’s also ideal for outdoor, personal defense, and everyday use. The Backup’s tailcap switch activates the flashlight at either output level. Press or click for a 110-lumen high beam—more than enough light to temporarily disorient an aggressor. Release or click off, then press or click on again within two seconds for a 5-lumen long-runtime low beam that’s ideal for reading a map or navigating a trail without degrading your night-adapted vision. The smooth, hard-anodized aluminum body takes it is easy on clothing and the two-way clip lets you carry the light head-up or head-down.

The SureFire™ Pen

Machined from high-strength aluminum and given an attractive Mil-Spec hard anodized finish, this eye-catching and spike-tough writing instrument writes effortlessly, but can provide a tactical advantage in case of emergency. It features a tumble-polished stainless steel tip, pocket clip, and a window-breaker tailcap—just in case. Made in the U.S., it comes with an imported Schmidt® easyFLOW ink cartridge but is fully adjustable to accept most ink cartridges between 3.875″ and 4.25″ long.
