Best designed flashlight I’ve seen. Squared off sides so it sits on surface without rolling. Switch easy to access and use, positive on and off. The yellow color makes it easy to find when it’s dark enough to need a flashlight. I’m amazed at the number of flashlights that are black. The hand grip is comfortable. AA batteries cost the same but have 4 times the capacity of AAA’s. And it is BRIGHT.

Great flashlight, March 19, 2010

This flashlight is fantastic. It’s very bright, with a nice white light (not bluish like some LED flashlights). The spot is very focused and long. I don’t know if it’s as long as it’s rated, but it’s very good. The spill light is also very bright and useful. Overall, the flashlight is very light and easy to hold. The switch is easy to depress. You may not be able to hammer in a nail, like a maglite, but the Dorcy is easier to hold. I am very happy with this light. I’ve had several of those “1 million candle power” spots over the years, and either the bulb burns out quickly, or the battery stops holding a charge after a short while. I’m tired of the hassles. This one is a keeper.

(Edit, addendum 10/13/07) Now after several months of extended use, it’s time to add to the review in light of experience. There is a downside and that is in the (electrical) contact on the back of the LED PCB (printed circuit board). The solder paths create a single lead/tin “button” in the center of the PCB. The positive terminal of the battery holder contacts this “button.” This solder “button” tends to oxidize as time goes on, and that makes the passage of current from the battery holder either absent or intermittant. In most cases, whacking the flashlight against the palm of your hand lengthwise will bounce the battery housing enough to break the oxidation layer and everything goes back to normal function. On the (now many) lights we’ve purchased and distributed, I took the time to removed the LED pcb and solder multple strands of copper acrosse the end of the button, or, simply solder a small copper circle to the button. In EVERY case, the problem vanished and hasn’t returned. While this is a minor problem, the pricing is such that it can pretty much be ignored. If one is so inclined, the time and effort necessary to effect a permanent repair is minimal and well worth the small effort involved. geoff —————– Through an Amazon special, I grabbed two of these along with two of the same company’s 21 LED lights (also three AAA’s). As another reviewer mentioned, these are “field” units and are susceptible to getting lost or damaged. Fundamentally, that requires that they be of a “disposable” prices. After receiving the initial order, I ordered another 6, one for each car, one for each child, one for the wife’s purse and a couple of spares for me, etc, etc. Good quality, good light, good design for the prices. VERY good. The future will tell if the longevity matches the other qualities. geoff beneze

Pay more, get much more, June 3, 2008

I bought both this 9-LED unit and one each of the “GIANT Light – Small Package” Flashlights; the 21-LED and 28-LED versions, both for $[...], right here on Amazon.com. side-by-side, the light put out by the 9-LED unit’s embarrassing. Yes, the 9-LED unit is slimmer; the head is the same size as the barrel, essentially, so it’ll slide conveniently into a space the size of a roll of quarters. But, when you pull it out and use it, if you’re lucky, like some here, it will work. In my case, I have to keep unscrewing and screwing in the battery compartment lid to keep it on… and it *still* flickers off for no reason or if lightly jostled. Forget it. The 21- and 28-LED units light up a dark closet like a floodlight. They’re amazing. For 12 bucks, the 28-LED unit is an excellent deal. Since they’re both the same size and price, I’d get it over the 21-LED unit. LEDs are power misers. And both units have been rock solid. And they come with a nifty little nylon velcro-closed belt case.

Nice idea for a cheap, light weight flashlight, but very poorly made. The light flashes on/off randomly. It will turn on sometime with the switch, at other times it must be lightly tapped or shaken, and sometimes nothing. It is essentially useless. It is most definitely NOT “Heavy Duty” as the description says. I liked the size and price, but this is just a piece of junk. I am returning it. Save yourself some aggravation, pay a few bucks more, get a name brand.

GREAT FLASHLIGHT!, November 16, 2009

A 180 lumen spotlight/flashlight. It lights up your whole bedroom, or hallway on the way to the bathroom at 2:00am! Very Bright. DON’T LOOK AT THE LIGHT!!! Light weight, fits the hand good. I wanted a flashlight that did not need bulb replacement, this one has a “forever bulb”. I wanted a flashlight that uses AA, this uses 4 AA and has a 5 hour run time. In a 4 day outage it should last if used conservatively. For me it is a perfect flashlight/spotlight. Instructions on installing batteries is non-existent and hard to figure out. The black bottom UNSCREWS! and the batteries go in two positive inward, and two positive outwards. There are little TINY pictures that show which way so look carefully. All in all a 5/5 and a good deal to boot!! With another small item, free shipping is available. Edit: Bought in Nov, 09. Now Apr, 2010. Still on original batteries, with no recharge! Not as bright of course, just a noticeable tad less, but still bright enough for indoors, and still shines across the street, real good. Real good for a 5 hour continuous run time. Best flashlight on the planet, my humble opinion. Why do you think 12 people, so far, give it 5 STARS?!?!?! It is AWESOME!! EDIT: Now is Nov. 10, 2010. I have used this flashlight nearly every day for the last year, on the ORIGINAL batteries without recharging them. I wanted to see what this baby could do! It is not as bright of course, but still bright enough for indoors. Outside I can no longer make out colors across the street in the dark, nor illuminate the farthest street sign 2 blocks away, nor the trees on the next street. But close up is still good and in the house is fine, still lights up my bedroom when shined on the ceiling! About 1/2 or less than brand new. Will now use my Rechargeable AA’s, and keep them charged, so will always be bright. Best Flashlight I have ever owned.
